Trail Difficulty Rating  Distance 2.2 miles (round trip) ; Average time: 2hrs; Difficulty: MODERATE to Challenging

This is a hike that begins at the first vista called the Calico 1 parking lot inside the park. The trail is a dirt and rocky path. At the conclusion of the hike, there is an opportunity to climb the sandstone rocks. Calico Tanks is a great trip for families or those wanting a relatively short introduction to Red Rock Canyon, because this hike combines elements of the prehistory, history, geology, beauty, and fun that makes Red Rock famous. You will need your hiking poles to help balance over the rocky trail and climb the rocks if you choose to climb them. There is a visitor's center with a gift shop to puruse at the conclusion of the hike for those who are interested.

Weather: Check the weather and dress accordingly. Dressing in layers is recommended as you may feel cool or cold at the start and warm up as the hike progresses.

Required Gear  Hat for sun, sunglasses, good shoes, hiking stick is a must, water and bring your camera!

Required Footwear: hiking shoes or tennis shoes with support and good tread

Minimum Amount of Water to Bring 2-3 bottles of water (no water on site). The air is often dry and arid so make sure you bring lots of water. Even in the morning it can be warm.

Minimum Amount of Food to Bring: sack lunch, fruit, nuts, peanut butter crackers,  or energy snacks.

Additional Items You May Want To Bring: Tissues (my nose ran constantly), allergy meds (lots of pollen in April), cell phone battery pack (your cell phone will quickly run out of power), lip balm/chapstick, lightweight backpack to carry snacks

Hike Description (include terrain, destination, challenges, flora, fauna, history):

Please visit http://www.redrockcanyonlv.org/lasvegas/hikes-trails/  if you would like to see the area. Red Rock Canyon features a one-way 12-mile scenic loop. It has 19 marked hiking trails. We will be hiking at the first trail, Calico 1. Each major trail branches off from a visitor lot or parking lot. Our lot is #1 which is called Calico 1. You will recognize the beautiful red rocks which are petrified sand dunes with beautiful swirls of reds and crème colors.

This hike is on a rocky and dirt trail for 2.2 miles. At the end of the hike, there will be an opportunity to climb the sandstone rocks, drive the 12-mile scenic loop, and visit the gift shop at the visitors center (see hike pics on the website) until it comes to a large natural tank area that fills with water and is geologically interesting with its plants and insect life.

There are bathrooms at the parking lot site. We must begin early because this is a popular trail, we want to take our time and it does get quite warm. We expect to begin the hike at 9am, and finish around 11:30am, ater which we can have lunch together, enjoy the rest of this breathtaking park, or enjoy the rest of the day with family and friends.

Driving Direction (include mileage, landmarks, turns) Driving time: Red Rock Canyon is located at 1000 Scenic Loop Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89161. Follow the initial directions to Las Vegas. If you are staying over we will meet at the Hampton Inn Las Vegas/Summerlin hotel lobby. Red Rock Canyon is about 15 miles from the Hampton Inn Las Vegas/Summerlin hotel according to Google Maps.

Leaving early: If you must leave the hike early please tell me. If I think your lost, I’m going to call heaven, my prayer partners, Pastor John (our supervising church pastor), all emergency services will be notified, and most likely the hiking group will be calling their families telling them they are waiting for you, and every angel in heaven will be on alert. We can avoid unnecessary stress, use of emergency personnel and heavenly time if you communicate. Emergency services are charged to people who unwisely use them.

Special Notes and Conditions: This is a neighborhood group of Abundant Living family church. Any activities outside of the hike are on your own and are not planned or supervised by the neighborhood group leader.

What happens when the weather does not cooperate: We will never go hiking in inclement weather (storms, lightning thunder possible flash floods, icy roads etc).  Only God knows all things, my job is to do my best at planning a great trip. I will make all efforts to email you if we must postpone a date or change sites as well as update this information page.
