Hike Description (include terrain, destination, challenges, flora, fauna, and history)
This hike is easy as far as elevation. The effort will be hiking a roundtrip of 6 miles. There will be plenty of rest periods and we will move at a moderate pace. We will begin at the trail head at Sapphire Road. This trail is Bane Canyon Road. We will not deviate from this road. We will take it straight into the Rolling M Ranch. There is an incline when you begin for the first ¼ mile until you reach the ranger kiosk and outhouse. Bane Canyon Road is primarily flat and wide with compacted dirt and some rolling areas. From there follow the trail for the next 2.75 miles until you come to the Rolling M Ranch historic sight. There is an outhouse at about mile 2.5 and also at your destination at the Rolling M has water, nice bathrooms and picnic areas and to eat and relax. Bane Canyon Rd is also used for drivers and personnel to get to the ranch so please beware of vehicles.
Chino Hills State Park Trail Head is located at 4721 Sapphire Road, Chino Hills, CA 91709. Please park on the road. If you want to enter the park you can drive on the dirt road. Entry is $10.
Chino Hills State Park, located in Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties is a 12,500-acre park is located near the northern end of what geologists call the Peninsular Ranges Geomorphic Province.
The Chino Hills are part of the group of hills that include the Puente Hills to the northwest. These hills form a roughly triangular area of approximately 35 square miles of valleys, canyons, hills and steep slopes. Sixty miles of trails and fire roads also offer excellent opportunities for viewing wildlife and native plants. Facilities consist of a picnic area, equestrian staging area, pipe corrals, a historic barn, water spigots and restrooms. Most of the trails accept multiple use. However, a few trails are designated for hiking only, because of safety issues or the potential for damage to habitat.
